English for Non-Majors

First-year students who need to fulfill the first-year writing requirement may take ENGRD 101 Rhetorical Composition/Critical Reading offered by the English department.

Introductory offerings that are good for non-majors include survey courses that provide a broad historical view of literature and its intellectual and cultural backgrounds (e.g., ENG 250, 251, 255, 256, 261, 262, 270, 271, and 275).

The department's upper-level courses are open to non-majors, including first-year students. Many of these courses fulfill Emory's post-freshman writing requirement and are open to students who are prepared to commit seriously to literary study.
