Internships
Why pursue an internship?
Whether you are seeking higher education or you're ready to enter the workforce right after college, internships in English provide excellent opportunities to strengthen your resume and gain valuable experience in the field. The internship program in English (496R) offers you an opportunity to earn academic credit for work done off-campus with firms and organizations in the Atlanta area and occasionally elsewhere.
Can I receive academic credit for an internship?
Yes. Interns may receive up to 12 hours of academic credit in English 496R, but no more than four hours in any one semester. No internship hours may be counted toward the major, and internship credits are always awarded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis. Internships performed over the summer may qualify for one credit hour, to be applied to the fall schedule.
Note: Non-academic summer internship credit is offered through the College, not by Departments. Contact college@emory.edu about this internship credit.
How do I find an internship?
A list of opportunities that may interest English majors is available below. We encourage you to seek other internship opportunities outside of this page to find one that will fit best with your goals. Emory College Pathways Center has excellent resources both for building documents and dossiers as well as finding new opportunities. The Pathways Center can also help you polish your resume and prepare for interviews.
What are the eligibility requirements for an internship?
The Department of English oversees academic internship credit for both English and creative writing majors. Applicants must have a good academic record, particularly in English courses. Applications must be completed before the end of Add/Drop for the semester when the internship will take place.
How do I apply for academic credit?
Contact Director of Undergraduate Studies Ross Knecht via email to apply for academic credit or for help with any questions you may have about the program.
