James Sant, who showed his works often at the Royal Academy Exhibitions (almost 250 paintings over a fifty-year period), was a renowned portrait painter. He was commissioned to do portraits for many of the noble and landed families of England, and in 1872 he was appointed portrait painter to the Queen.
