Arthur Hughes (1832-1915)

Hughes fell under the influence of the Pre-Rahaelites early in his career; he exhibited his first major Pre-Raphaelite painting Ophelia in 1852 when he was just twenty years old. He painted several brilliant pictures, much admired by the Brotherhood, but around 1870 his work began to decline and he spent the latter part of his career as an illustrator for periodicals, novels, and children's books.
