Exceptionally qualified English majors may earn both the
B.A. and M.A. degrees in four years. Such students pursue
a more intensive course of study in English and are jointly
enrolled in the College and the Graduate School during
their senior year. If you are planning to go on for a
Ph.D. in English or if you are interested in teaching
English in a secondary school, having an M.A. in hand
after four years can be advantageous. Students must apply
for the program in their junior year and be admitted
by both the department and the Graduate School. Students
planning to apply should complete at least seven
English courses by the end of the Junior year, with a
GPA close to 4.0 within those courses.
B.A./M.A. Requirements
Applicants must submit a detailed research plan and have
the written recommendation of three members of the department's
graduate faculty, one of whom agrees to be the potential
advisor. Applicants must also take the Graduate Record
Examination and make formal application to the Graduate School.
The application should be completed by the end of the junior
year.
Program requirements are as follows:
52 hours in English beyond the introductory level
- 12 of these hours must be in graduate courses taken
in the senior year
- No English course may be taken S/U
- Two semesters as a full-time student after admission
to the program
- A satisfactory M.A. thesis and general oral examination
If you are considering the B.A./ M.A. program, the earlier
you begin planning for it the better. You should consult
with your adviser about what courses you ought to take
as a junior to ensure that you are adequately prepared
to enter the program. At present, B.A./ M.A. students may
also participate in the Honors program. Consult both the
Director of Undergraduate Studies and the Director of Graduate
Studies for further details. |
