The song on this page is "Keep the Home-Fires Burning," a popular song in World War I. The lyrics are by Lena Ford and the music by Ivor Novello.

Keep the home-fires burning,
While your hearts are yearning,
Though your lads are far away
They dream of home;
There's a silver lining
Through the dark cloud shining,
Turn the dark cloud inside out,
Till the boys come home.

A personal note from Harry Rusche:

The young man standing in this photograph is my great-uncle, Elmer Little. He grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and enlisted just after he graduated from high school. This photo was taken before America entered the First World War.

On the back is a message to my grandmother's sister, Stella Ames: "Am having the time of my life. How do I look?" Aunt Stella and Uncle Elmer were married after he came back from World War I.

Uncle Elmer was in the navy all his life, fought in both World Wars, and came through unscathed. He retired from the navy and died during the 1960's.
